Canadian hammer throw phenom Ethan Katzberg was impressive at the Scotstoun Stadium. On his first attempt, he threw his hammer to a distance of 80.97 metres, setting a new Commonwealth Games record.
The Nanaimo, British Columbia native then threw the hammer beyond 80 metres on three more times. His first attempt was his best. With that first toss, he won gold.
Taking second was Iosof Kesidis from Cyprus. And finishing third was fellow Canadian Rowan Hamilton. They tossed for 76.97m and 75.36, respectively.
“It was amazing. My arms were getting a bit tired from holding the flag,” Katzberg said. “The fans show so much support for the athletes, and being able to take photos, give high-fives and celebrate with them was an incredible feeling.”
The 24-year-old holds the Canadian and North American records for the hammer throw with a 84.70m from the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, where he won gold. He is the two-time defending world champion and defending 2024 Paris Olympic champion. In 2022, Katzberg took silver at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in Alexander Stadium.
