Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage delivered the performance of the evening at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday, launching the javelin 89.75 metres to upset Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and headline a session that also crowned Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell in the women’s 800 metres, South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile in the men’s 200m and the British Virgin Islands’ Adaejah Hodge over the women’s half-lap.
Pathirage shocks Chopra in javelin
Sri Lanka’s Pathirage produced one of the standout performances of the championships with an 89.75m throw to seize the men’s javelin title. The mark comfortably surpassed India’s Neeraj Chopra, whose season’s best 85.83m secured silver. Fellow Indian Yash Vir Singh celebrated a personal best of 85.41m to take bronze.
Hunter Bell controls the 800m
Georgia Hunter Bell timed her race to perfection, taking command over the final 200 metres to win the women’s 800m in 1:59.51. Kenya’s Lilian Odira followed for silver in 2:00.58, narrowly holding off Australia’s Sarah Billings, who crossed in 2:00.61 for bronze.
The race was tactical, but the finish came down to the classic 200m final effort. Hunter Bell owns a personal best of 1:54.90 in the event. She is also the national record holder in the indoor and outdoor 1500m runs. The 32-year-old is having a career stretch having set 11 personal bests and two national records over the past two years.
Odira has run slightly faster with her gold medal win at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 1:54.62. Billings holds the national and Oceania record for the 800m with her best of 1:57.01.
Sprint titles for Dambile and Hodge
South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile slipped under 20 seconds to win the men’s 200m finishing in 19.96. Nigeria’s Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike clocked a season’s best 20.09 for silver, while Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor earned bronze with a personal-best 20.11.
Adaejah Hodge added another major title to the British Virgin Islands’ growing sprint tradition, winning the women’s 200m in 22.07. Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe claimed silver in 22.35, with Jamaica’s Alana Reid taking bronze in 22.56.
Beacroft edges race walk, McCartney prevails on countback
Australia’s Isaac Beacroft survived one of the closest finishes of the championships in the men’s 10,000m race walk, recording a season’s best 38:45.51 to edge Kenya’s Stephen Ndangiri Kihu, who set a personal best of 38:46.57. Canada’s Olympic and World Championships medallist Evan Dunfee completed the podium in 40:03.39.
The women’s pole vault was decided on countback after New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney and Australia’s Nina Kennedy each cleared 4.65m. McCartney took gold, while Kennedy settled for silver. New Zealand’s Imogen Ayris cleared 4.55m to secure bronze and give her country two medals in the event.
Walker and Nathaniel win the 400m hurdles
Jamaica’s Sanique Walker ran a personal best 54.00 to claim the women’s 400m hurdles title. England’s Emily Newnham finished just four-hundredths behind in 54.04, while Canada’s Savannah Sutherland earned bronze with a season’s best 54.16.
Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel won the men’s race in 48.47 ahead of England’s Jake Minshull (48.99) and Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson (49.22).
