The 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday brought out the best in a pair of Australians. They dominated the 5000m event. In the women’s race. Rose Davies and Jessica Hull finished first and second in the event, clocking 14:44.53 and 14:45.01, with Scotland’s Megan Keith finishing in third position in 14:49.10.

Davies had stayed with this leading group for the entire race before surging past Keith with just 180m to go. She could become the first woman to win both the 10,000m and 5000m at a Commonwealth Games.

The 26-year-old had company in fellow Australian Jessica Hull, who was there, putting on the pressure. She is a consistent world championship and Olympic performer over middle distances.

Hull’s race in Glasgow was playing out to plan, as she appeared composed, while being led by Davies.

And then there were two flying down the finish straight.

“I knew I might have been in trouble leading with Jess on my shoulder with 150 metres to go. She’s so fast, and I just thought, give it everything,” Davies told Channel Seven.

All three were season-best performances.

Hull, a middle-distance specialist, holds eight noteworthy records, six of which are Oceania records, one Australian national and the 2000m world record of 5:19.70. Six years ago, she ran her 5000m PB of 14:43.80 during the Monaco Diamond League meet.

Meanwhile, Davies holds the Oceania record in the 5000m and 10,000m, which she set in 2025 at 14:31.45 and 30:41.11. Keith holds the national record in the 10K road race at 30:07, which she set this year in February and has run the 5000m as fast as 14:43.24.
