The Sydney Marathon organizers are doing everything they can to put the race on the global destination map. For the 2025 edition, the marathon joins the popular World Marathon Majors series. And now Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan is scheduled to race it.

The Olympic marathon champion has committed to the event scheduled for Sunday, 31 August 2025.

Hassan has already made a major impact on the global marathon scene, winning two Abbott World Marathon Majors: London in 2023, where she triumphed in her debut over the distance. She raced Chicago later that year, when she recorded a personal best of 2:13:44, the third-fastest time in history. Since then, she placed fourth at the Tokyo Marathon 2024, claimed gold in the marathon at the Paris Olympics in an Olympic record time of 2:22:55 after earning bronze in both the 5000m and 10,000m. She recently secured a podium finish with third place at the TCS London Marathon 2025.

Hassan is now looking forward to the challenge of racing in Sydney, which will also make its debut on the Abbott World Marathon Majors calendar.

“I’m really looking forward to racing another Major and experiencing the energy of the Sydney crowds,” said Hassan. “Australia is such a strong athletics nation, and a great marathon needs passionate and loud fans, so I’m excited. I’m also honoured to be part of the Sydney Marathon’s first year as a Major.”
