Putting himself in position for a sprint, New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish kicked hard for the win during the latter stages of the 3000 metre steeplechase.

With just 20 metres to go, he dropped the pace hard and bettered Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkale to win in 8:33.88 to El Bakkale’s 8:33.95. Edmund Serem of Kenya finished third in 8:34.56.

The victory gives New Zealand its first track medal from the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

The first Japanese finisher was Ryuji Miura, who finished eighth in 8:35.90.

The 28-year-old Beamish came into his own in 2024, setting five personal bests from the 1500m to the 5000m. His 3000m, 3000msc and 5km road bests are national records at 7:34.88, 8:09.64 and 13:36, respectively. His 3000ms is also the Oceania record, and his two-mile best is also an Oceania record 8:05.73.

El Bakkali is the two-time defending champion from the 2022 Eugene and 2023 Budapest Championships. He also took bronze at the 2019 Doha Games and silver at the 2017 London meet. Beamish won gold at the 2024 Glasgow World Indoor Championships in the 1500m event.
