The University of Cincinnati Bearcats

Friday saw the University of Cincinnati track & field send athletes to a pair of meets with two men competing in the 125th Penn Relays and the rest of the Bearcats heading to Louisville for the Lyles/Wood Invitational. On the day, the Bearcats won four events, posted six marks that rank among the Top 10 all-time in program history and recorded 12 personal bests.

// GRABBING GOLD

All four victories came in field events in Louisville with Irati Mitxelena winning the open long jump and Jane Sensibaugh taking the title in the open shot put for the women while Aaron Deaton won the open shot put and Chris Province the open hammer for the men. Mitxelena used a strong tailwind (+4.0) to jump to the win with a season-best leap of 6.03m (19-09.50) while Sensibaugh won the shot put with a PR of 14.76m (48-05.25), a mark that also ranks her seventh all-time in program history. On the men’s side, Deaton won his shot put title with a best of 15.88m (52-01.25) while Province won the hammer with a PR toss of 54.35m (178-04), moving up to #8 all-time at UC.

// MOVING ON

Two other Bearcats won their events, but only the first half as they posted the top times in the preliminary round of their sprints to earn a spot in Saturday’s finals. On the women’s side, Caisja Chandler ran 11.63 to post the top time in the 100m dash while also bettering her all-time #5 and UC freshman record time. She was one of three women to advance to the finals as Haisha Bisiolu was fourth in 11.77 and Tiona Lattimore seventh in a season-best time of 11.81.

On the men’s side, Arthur Greenlee ran a PR 14.18 in the 110m hurdles to post the fastest time of the day and the #9 time in program history to lead three men into the final. Connor Duricky was the fourth qualifier with a time of 14.60 while Isaiah McCall was the sixth qualifier with a PR of 14.44 (Duricky won his heat to automatically qualify while McCall advanced on time). Two men also advanced to the final in the 100m dash as Anthony Woods was the fifth qualifier in 10.86 and Quincy Mitchell sixth in 10.47.

// CLIMBING THE LISTS

Along with the other marks recorded, Jacob Rieman added another to the books as he finished third in the hammer with a toss of 53.75m (176-04). His toss is a personal best and ranks as the #9 mark in program history.

// PERSONAL BESTS

Several other Bearcats recorded personal bests, including Ellee Bullock, who ran 18:23.71 in the 5,000m run to finish 17th overall and lower her previous best time by 25 seconds. Sam Mikula was the top finisher for UC in the race in eighth place with a season-best 17:48.68.

In the field, Kaylia Black recorded personal bests in two events. First, she threw 12.14m (39-10.00) to finish 15th in the shot put before throwing the hammer out to 38.64m (126-09). In the long jump, Kennedy Marable jumped 5.84m (19-02.00) for a PR and her mark would have tied for the #10 mark all-time in UC history, but the tailwind was over the allowable at +4.1. Katie Straus, also in the long jump, tied her season and personal best with a leap of 5.45m (17-10.75).

// PENN RELAYS RESULTS

Two men took part in shot put events at the 125th Penn Relays Friday afternoon as well. Marcus Abraham led the way as he placed seventh overall in the Championship of America division as he threw a best of 17.21m (56-05.50) on the day. Sam Meece, competing in the open division, placed 12th out of 51 entrants, hitting a mark of 16.27m (53-04.50) for a season best.

// IN THE BLOCKS

Meece will round out the competition in Philadelphia Saturday as he is set to compete in the championship division of the men’s discus. The rest of the team will travel to Louisville to compete in the Lyles/Wood Invitational.
