Perhaps lost in the cacophony around New Zealand 16-year-old Sam Ruthe’s record-breaking mile performance in Boston last week, Norway’s 19-year-old Håkon Moe Berg delivered his own indoor performance of note at the BAUHAUS-galan Indoor. He ran unchallenged to victory in the 1500 metres, accomplishing an indoor personal best and early-season world lead of 3:34.32.
It is a European U23 record. The former (U20) record was held by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen at 3:36.02 set in Düsseldorf on February 20, 2019.
The double European U20 champion drafted the pacemaker before surging clear with three laps (600m) remaining to claim the more than five-second win over second-place finisher Mosisa Seyoum of Ethiopia.
Taking third was Arthur Gervais of France. The two ran 3:39.54 and 3:39.76, respectively.
Last August, Berg ran 3:30.28 for a new outdoor personal best.
He is a two-time U20 World Champion from Tampere, Finland, last yea,r taking the 1500m and the 3000m events.
He turns 20 in June.
