Thirty-year-old Kenyan distance runner Brian Kipsang has been suspended for a period of two years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

Kipsang provided a sample in Rome, Italy, at the Rome Marathon in March 2025. The Italian city was where he clocked his personal best time of 2:07:56 the year prior. The World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited lab in Rome also tested the sample.

The sample contained Triamcinolone acetonide, a banned substance.

Kipsang admitted fault early and therefore was given a reduced suspension from four years to two years.

Kipsang finished the marathon in 2:07:58 in 2025, just two seconds slower than the year before. He has also run 2:09:07 in Barcelona six years ago and a pair of 2:12s. Kipsang ran the 2024 Toronto Marathon in the time of 2:08:38.

While it is not proven, the assumption is that he was doping for most of the past six years as his performances have dipped below 2:10 since 2019.

Suspensions during April 2025

Five Kenyans were suspended during the month of April, which is a consistent number since the Athletics Integrity Unit was launched by World Athletics.

Surprising to some may be the number of Indian athletes suspended. India, like Russia, but in a very different route has a major doping problem; its all chaos and random cheating, similar to Kenya’s issues that have given the country a negative reputation.

Nine Indian athletes have been suspended during the same period.

Note, the infractions may not have happened during April 2025, however, the suspension were announced during the month.
