As the 2017 indoor track and field season is now underway, one has to comment on the disparity between the quality of the women’s performances compared the men’s marks. Seven women have recorded marks over 1100 IAAF points including two national records by Sultana Frizell (weight throw) and Alysha Newman (pole vault). Last weekend, while 14 women improved their marks to be included in the top-20, only five men did the same.

Of course, many of our top athletes bypass the indoor season or have limited exposure to competing on the smaller 200-metre surface. The indoor season is a great opportunity for our developing athletes to gain competitive experience.
