The 46th running of the Vancouver Island Race Series gets an early start to the 2026 road racing season as the Harriers’ Pioneer 8K takes off on Sunday, January 11 at 11:30 AM.
Olympians will lead the field.
The event is the first race in Canada to take place at the start of the year. Run since 1978, predating the series by two years, the Pioneer 8K returns to its 38-year home at the Saanich Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are located just 15 minutes from downtown Victoria.
The new course
A new, never-before-used course is set up that is approximately as fast as the previous editions, but also spectator-friendly, with its double-loop course starting and finishing within the Saanich Fairgrounds.

Runners will travel around a 2.1 km loop twice before travelling further outside the Fairgrounds on a gently rolling and flat stretch of road, which includes a soft, 180-degree turnaround at 5km. The map is available here.
The previous two courses, one run at the Saanich Fairgrounds and one in North Saanich, were very similar in elevation change, number of turns and overall raceability. The new course will be approximately as fast and has been measured over a more compact area. This new course is certified for records and standards.
A few elite athletes
Always a favourite of the Vancouver Island racing community, the race often attracts a fast field for its community-style organization. For 2026, three-time Olympian Natasha Wodak of North Vancouver will race. Also, in the field is Dayna Pidhoresky, who competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. Both athletes are past winners.
Both athletes are early in their seasonal training and just testing the waters to see where their fitness is.
Typically, the island-based national triathlon team will race, as will the University of Victoria Vikes. The Vikes women are the 2025 U Sports national cross country champions.
The event records are 25:28 and 22:58 by Natasha Wodak and Carey Nelson (1985), respectively. Wodak also holds the masters 35-plus record of 25:55 from her running in 2020. Her 25:28 time is the fastest known run in Canadian history (8km distance is not kept as an official record). She currently holds the national marathon record at 2:23:12 from Berlin in 2022. Wodak formerly held the national 10,000m and half-marathon records. They were both bettered by Andrea Seccafien.
In 2025, Tristan Woodfine, who was left off the Tokyo Olympic team due to Cameron Levins‘ 11th-hour performance in Austria to qualify, set the recent course’s record at 23:10. It is the fastest run of any of the courses, behind only Nelson’s record.
Defending champions are triathlete Russell Pennock of Calgary with his 24:01 performance and Maple Ridge, BC native and Vancouver Thunderbird Jamie Hennessy with her 27:48 clocking.
The race and the series
The Harriers’ Pioneer 8K is typically the first race of the year in the Vancouver Island Race Series. It is one of three similar series in the province of British Columbia. Its cohorts are the Lower Mainland Series of Greater Vancouver and the Interior Series, which includes Kelowna, Kamloops, and Prince George, among other locations.
The Vancouver Island Race Series offers eight races of distances, including 5km, two at 8km, three at 10km, one 12km and a half-marathon at 21.1km. All races are certified for records and standards.
