Eighteen-year-old Australian Gout Gout ran faster over 200m than Usain Bolt did at the same age on Sunday.

Gout clocked a stunning 19.67 to set a new world U20 record, which is his first legal sub-20 performance. He had previously dipped under with a wind-assisted 19.84 in 2025, but this one counts.

Early season or not, it stands as the 2026 world lead.

The performance continues a rapid progression. Gout already holds the fastest time ever by a 16-year-old and, in 2024, broke Australia’s long-standing national record of 20.06.

His 19.67 in Sydney moves him ahead of Bolt’s 19.93 from 2004, which the Jamaican ran at age 17.

There was depth behind him, too. Aidan Murphy finished second in 19.88, making it two Australians under 20 seconds on the day.

“We have such incredible athletes in Australia,” said Gout. “Racing each other pushes us to the limit. Two Australians sub-20—this is amazing.

“There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I’ve done it legally. I know I have the speed, and I’m ready for more.”

Gout is expected to skip the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this July, opting instead to focus on the World U20 Championships in Oregon in early August.
