The European 10,000m Cup returns Saturday, May 23, in La Spezia, Italy, promising the sort of distance‑running theatre that doesn’t require lasers, smoke machines, or a DJ yelling “Make some noise!” every four minutes. The racing alone should be enough. Meanwhile, in Canada’s national capital of Ottawa, Ontario, a road 10K will open the Ottawa Marathon weekend.
Cream of Europe race over 10,000m
Italy’s own Ilias Ouani, the reigning European marathon champion, headlines the men’s field. He is the home favourite with enough range to make 25 laps look almost civilized. France counters with Valentin Gondouin, fresh off a European half-marathon bronze and carrying the kind of confidence that makes athletes forget how long 10,000 metres actually is. And then there’s Poland’s Elżbieta Glinka, whose rise from recreational runner to national record‑breaker has been so abrupt it feels like someone skipped a chapter in the script.
Expect front‑running. Expect national pride. Expect at least one athlete to discover, somewhere around lap 17, that championship 10,000m racing is a different animal entirely. With summer season momentum on the line, this is distance running stripped to its essentials.
You can watch every lap with no geoblocking, no hoops to jump through on the European Athletics YouTube channel, starting at 17:05 CEST.
Meanwhile, Ottawa prepares to host its own road running showcase
Across the Atlantic, the streets of Ottawa are gearing up for the 2026 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, where Saturday’s Canadian 10K Championships serve as a marquee event. The field is stacked with Olympians, World Championships veterans, national champions, and more than a few athletes who have rewritten the Canadian record books.
In other words, if you’re going to run fast on Canadian soil this spring, this is where you do it.

This year also marks a first in that Athletics Canada is officially overseeing the masters categories. Any athlete aged 35+ racing the 10K Championships is eligible for age‑group medals, which can be collected at the Elite Baggage tent on the west end of Confederation Park. A small but meaningful nod to the athletes who keep showing up, year after year, long after the sport stops pretending to be glamorous.
On Sunday, the Tartan International Marathon continues the momentum as the next stop on Athletics Canada’s Road Race Label circuit — another chance for domestic elites to test themselves on a properly measured course without needing to cross an ocean.
Can’t make it to Ottawa? You can stream the Canadian 10K Championships live on AthleticsCanada.TV.
Clash of the Clubs at Castellon
The cream of European club athletics clashes at Castellon at the European Champions Clubs Cup (ECCC) in Castellon, Spain, on Saturday (23) and Sunday (24).
Host club Playas de Castellon fields a typically strong team, including SPAR European cross country champion Thierry Ndikumwenayo and European indoor bronze medallist Lester Lescay in the 5000m and long jump, respectively.
Their ranks are also strengthened by the inclusion of Spanish-based Ethiopian Likina Amebaw, who finished second behind Faith Kipyegon in the 5000m in the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday, in both the 3000m and 5000m.
However, the hosts will face tough competition from Sporting Clube de Portugal, whose team includes world indoor long jump champion Gerson Balde and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan and Enka Sport Club, whose ranks include 2023 European indoor triple jump champion Tugba Danismaz, who will be doing double duty, having also been entered for the long jump.
The European Champions League Cup will be streamed live on the European Athletics YouTube channel, without any geoblocking restrictions, from 15:45 CEST on Saturday and from 9:30 CEST on Sunday.
