The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has served a two-year competition ban to 34-year-old South African marathon runner Thantsha Reghen Magwai.

His ban began on August 14 for the presence and/or use of morphine. Competition results from May 3, 2026, have been disqualified.

Magwai has a marathon personal best of 2:11:21, which is a performance that will be DQ’d coming on May 3rd. Four years prior, he ran a half-marathon best of 1:01:24.

From the AIU: ÈFurther to Rule 13.2.3 ADR, WADA and the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport (”SAIDS”) have a right of appeal against this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, in accordance with the procedure set out at Rule 13.6.1 ADR.È

Morphine is a prohibited substance under the WADA 2026 Prohibited List under the category S7. Narcotics. It is a specified substance prohibited in competition only.
