*Update: Kipyegon has been disqualified after a protest for the contact that she made with Tsegay. Hassan moves up to silver and Nadia Battocletti of Italy earns bronze along with her national record.
*Update: Kipyegon was reinstated. However, the International Olympic Committee has handed Kipyegon a yellow card, meaning that in the 1500m races, if she interferes with someone and it is deemed her fault, she may be disqualified. Meanwhile, teammate Beatrice Chebet who won the race said that the contact was not her fault.
The women’s 5000-metre final went Sunday at Stade de France and it was a thriller.
The deepest 5000m race in history went out slow and finished fast, with a ferocious kick over the final 50m from Kenyan Beatrice Chebet for the win in 14:28.56.

Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay slipped past Faith Kipyegon with two laps to go, but made contact. They yelled at each other and Kipyegon made a motion at Tsegay; no love lost there between the bitter rivals.
Kipyegon, with a lap remaining, made a move past Tsegay and blasted by her, as the Ethiopian grimaced and faded hard. Fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, the 2023 and 2024 World Cross Country Champion and 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships silver medallist, took the lead with fewer than 200m to go and dropped her teammate hard.
The Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan, who is competing in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon, bided her time in last place for several laps before moving into the middle of the pack. Her sprint was good, but was not in position for the win, when facing Kipyegon and Chebet over the final 200m.
She took third.
