The Canadian 5K Road Championships were part of the Montreal Marathon weekend starting last Friday, September 20th. There was also a kilometre, mile, 10K and a half-marathon.
Montreal native Charles Philibert-Thiboutot won the mile in 4:08 on Friday, then won the national 5K championships in 14:14. He then followed up by pacing the half-marathon on Sunday. Julie Anne Staehli won the 5K championships in 16:11.
Philibert-Thiboutot’s record-breaking two-for-two

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot signed up for two races over Montreal Marathon weekend and he went to sleep last night with two wins and one Quebec record!
On Friday, Philibert-Thiboutot smashed the Quebec record in the men’s road mile in a winning effort. The new provincial benchmark in the event is 4:08.
The two-time Olympian raced again the next day, winning the men’s race of the 2024 Canadian 5K Championships, clocking in with a time of 14:14. Tristan Woodfine (14:25) edged Thomas Violette (14:26) to claim silver.
Staehli goes back-to-back
Julie Anne Staehli won her second straight Canadian 5K Championship, winning the women’s race in a time of 16:11. She won the 2022 race in Moncton with a time of 15:55.

Erin Teschuk was next over the line for silver, clocking in at 16:17, while Cleo Boyd was third in a time of 16:26.
Marathon
The top three men in the marathon were: P. K Kiptanui from Eldoret, Kenya clocking a 2:15:09 performance. Taking second was MOroccan Hadout Mousab in the time of 2:16:49, while the third-place finisher was Kenyan John Langat with a 2:18:53 performance. The first Canadian was Blair Morgan from Ottawa clocking in at 2:25:11 and finishing in sixth place.
Unlike the men’s race, the top-three women were Canadian. The winner was Mélanie Desautels from Sherbrooke, QC. She finished in 2:46:16. Two minutes back was Janie Grand’Mason from Montréal in 2:48:22 and third was Catherine Paul of nearby Sorel-Tracy, QC in 2:59:17
