One of the most remarkable results from the 2026 Toruń World Indoor Championships was 17-year-old American Cooper Lutkenhaus’s 1:44.24 win in the final, to secure gold.

He bettered Eliott Crestan of Belgium by 0.14 seconds, who finished in 1:44.38. Taking third was Mohamed Attaoui of Spain in 1:44.66.

Lutkenhaus does not turn 18 for another nine months.

Lutkenhaus is a junior at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. He is the youngest men’s individual global champion in the history of athletics. The superlative includes indoors, outdoors, roads, cross country in the open category: He is the youngest global champion, full stop.

Until 2025, Lutkenhaus had yet to race on an indoor track.

Other interesting performances

Canadian Christopher Morales-Williams, at just 21, won the men’s 400 metre event, clocking a 44.76 in the final. At age 19, he had set national records in the event indoors and outdoors, going 44.05 and 44.49, respectively. He competes in the NCAA for the University of Georgia Bulldogs.

There was no doubt that Sweden’s Armand Duplantis would win gold; it was a question of by how much and whether he would set a record. He did both. Duplants vaulted to 6.25 metres over second-place Emmanouill Karalis’s 6.05 metre effort. Taking third was Australia’s Krtis Marschall with a new personal best of 6.00.

For Duplantis, who broke his own world record in Sweden on March 12 with a 6.31 metre vault, took the venue record at the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena in Toruń.
