UK Athletics has confirmed the selection of Cameron Corbishley for this summer’s European Championships in Birmingham, a call-up that reflects both consistency and quiet progression in a discipline currently undergoing significant change.
The Medway and Maidstone athlete, coached by Andi Drake, has been named to the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the marathon race walk. His place remains subject to confirmation via the European Athletics “Road to Birmingham” rankings, due to be finalized on 30 July, but the intent is clear: Corbishley is firmly in the frame.
Selection aligns with UK Athletics’ broader championship objectives—targeting top-eight individual finishes while contributing to an overall top-three placing in the medal table. Within that context, Corbishley’s profile fits. He is not a headline-grabber in the conventional sense, but he is increasingly dependable on the international stage.
At the World Race Walking Team Championships in Brazil earlier this year, Corbishley placed 12th among European athletes in the marathon distance, a result that reinforced his standing within the continent. That performance followed a 2025 season in which he outperformed his world ranking at the World Championships in Tokyo, suggesting a capacity to deliver when it matters. More recently, he secured the British half-marathon race walk title in Leeds, underlining his domestic credentials.
His selection also comes at a transitional moment for race walking. World Athletics’ decision to replace the traditional 20km and 35km events with half-marathon and marathon distances has reshaped the event’s demands. Athletes like Corbishley—experienced across multiple distances—may find themselves well-positioned in this evolving landscape.
The European Championships race walk events will take place on the streets of Birmingham on Saturday 15 August, the penultimate day of competition. In a sport often removed from the spotlight, the accessibility of a home championship, free for spectators, offers a rare opportunity for broader engagement.
Tom Craggs, UK Athletics’ World Class Programme Endurance Lead, framed the selection in measured but optimistic terms:
“Competing at a home championship will make this a particularly special occasion. Cameron has built a strong record across European and World competition, and his performance in Brazil showed he can mix it with the best in Europe. We’re looking forward to seeing him represent the team in Birmingham.”
For Corbishley, the task now is straightforward, if not simple: convert steady progression into a defining championship performance, on home roads, in front of a home crowd.
