Great Britain & Northern Ireland have competed in all World Athletics Championships since the first edition in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland.
That first year, the team medalled in seven events, including winning two golds by Steve Cram in the 1500 metres and Daley Thompson in the Decathlon. The biggest years were 1993 in Stuttgart, where the team brought home medals from 10 events, a record they tied in 2019 in Budapest. The low was in Paris in 2003 with just three medals. Otherwise, GB & NI typically pick up approximately seven medals.
Mo Farah is the most successful British Athlete in championship history. He is also the most successful distance runner in the history of the championships with six gold and two silver medals split evenly between 5000 metres and 10,000 metres events.
However, Jamaican Usain Bolt in the sprints has won more individual gold medals than Farah.
Jessica Ennis-Hill is the most successful British female athlete. She earned three gold medals in the heptathlon. The individual event with the most different British gold medallists is the men’s 1500 metres, won by three men: Steve Cram in 1983, Jake Wightman in 2022 and Josh Kerr in 2023.
