Charlotte Purdue who is coached by Nic Bideau and represents the Aldershot Farnham and District has been chosen to run for Team Great Britain. As has Calli Hauger-Thackery (Hallamshire) and Phil Sesemann (Andrew Henderson, Leeds City). This was announced by the British Olympic Association (BOA) on Wednesday. They are the first three of the potential six marathon athletes selected for the athletics team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Purdue gets her chance

The selection for Purdue is particularly meaningful, as she was not selected for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (2021). At the time, she was the second-fastest British marathon runner. She continued to train hard and race well and has improved her times since.

Purdue ran 2:25:38. She was the fourth-fastest British marathon runner of all time in 2021.

Apparently, British Athletics (BA) staff had said during the appeal that Purdue was only training 30 minutes at a time. However, Bideau notified BA in advance of the selection that she was back running more than 130-plus kms per week. Her previous injuries disappeared.

“I did everything that they asked me to do including six weeks of rehab, which I wouldn’t have normally done.”

Since then she has run 2:23:26 during the London Marathon in Oct. 2021, followed by a 2:22:17 last Sept. in Berlin.

The three British athletes

After running inside the qualification standard of 2:08:04 at the Seville marathon earlier this month, Phil Sesemann has been selected for the men’s race. Purdue and Hauger-Thackery have earned their place. They both ran 2:22:17 at separate marathons at the end of 2023.

All three athletes are set to compete at their first Olympic Games. However, have represented their country at global and continental championships previously.

The athletes are among the first members of the Team GB athletics squad to be announced. As per selection policy, any athlete who has planned to compete in a marathon after Feb. 19, 2024, will only be considered for selection in round 3 on April 22, 2024.

Team GB Chef de Mission, Mark England, said, “It is great to welcome Charlotte, Calli and Phil to Team GB for Paris 2024. All three athletes are making their Olympic debuts. I am sure they will relish the opportunity to run the unique and historic route that has been set by the Organising Committee.”

Olympic Head Coach at UK Athletics, Paula Dunn, said,

“We are delighted to confirm the first three athletes in the athletics squad for Paris 2024. All three athletes have produced excellent results to earn selection for the Olympic Games. So congratulations to the athletes, their coaches and support networks.

“The focus is now on supporting their preparations and continuing to engage with them to add the most value, so they are in the best position for their marathons this summer.”
