Kenya continues to grapple with a significant doping problem. Estimates suggest that between 300 and 500 Kenyan athletes have been suspended or implicated in doping-related cases since roughly 2012, making it one of the most serious anti-doping challenges in international athletics.
The reasons athletes resort to doping are complex and extend well beyond the reach of any single sporting organization. In Kenya, widespread poverty and the prospect of life-changing earnings through athletics are often cited as contributing factors. For many runners, success on the international circuit offers a rare opportunity to support extended families and escape poverty. Prize money and appearance fees earned in Europe, North America and Asia can have a transformative impact when sent home. That financial reality can also create immense pressure to succeed, potentially making the temptation to cheat as powerful as the motivation to train.

While no digital platform can eliminate the underlying economic pressures that contribute to doping, Athletics Kenya is attempting to improve oversight, communication and accountability through new technology.
On social media, Athletics Kenya executive Barnaba Korir announced the launch of one such initiative.
Korir, a former 5,000-metre runner with a personal best of 13:25.56 set in 1991, is First Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), an executive committee member and chair of youth development at Athletics Kenya, and director of the World Athletics Continental Tour Nairobi.
“Today marks a major milestone in the digital transformation of athletics in Kenya with the official launch of Riadha Connect, an innovative online platform developed by Athletics Kenya in partnership with the Government and the Athletics Integrity Unit.”
According to Korir, “Riadha Connect will revolutionize the management of athletics by providing a centralized digital platform for athlete and coach registration, licensing, competition management, communication and access to key athletics services. The platform will enhance efficiency, transparency, accountability and integrity while making it easier for athletes, coaches, officials and stakeholders to interact with Athletics Kenya.”
