Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna threw for a world record at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational on Sunday, April 13. He broke his own world record in the discus throw. Alekna threw for 75.56 metres.

The 22-year-old broke the world record of 74.35m in 2023. Two years later in the same venue, he was at it again.

Alekna opened with a 74.89m effort, which improved on his previous record. He then tossed for 75.56m during the fourth round. He is the first discus thrower to surpass the 75m mark.

Australia’s Matt Denny, the Paris Olympic bronze medallist, also threw farther than Alekna’s previous world record. Just three days after throwing 74.25m in Ramona, Denny went 74.78m on Sunday and produced a competitive meet with a 73.36m throw in the final round.

The USA’s Sam Mattis, who had finished runner-up to Denny with a 70.08m effort, improved to 71.27m to take third.

Five athletes went farther than 70m, seven threw better 69m.

At the age of 19, Alekna won silver at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, becoming the youngest world discus medallist in history. Alekna was then the youngest-ever winner in his discipline at the 2022 European Championships, setting the competition record in the process. Alekna earned silver at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

He is the son of double Olympic discus throw champion Virgilijus Alekna. His brother Martynas Alekna is also a discus thrower.
