Over recent years, the global running community has learned that life in Kenya is not all about beautiful running vistas, and peaceful people who live honestly and in a clean way. Not even close. Murder, violence, extortion, and rampant cheating in sports for money appear to be the norm.
For example, the latest news is that Kenyan marathon runner Lucy Kabuu is defending herself in court against her ex-husband’s claim to half of her Sh70-million (USD $540,000) earnings. She has said that she earned the money herself and that Jeremiah Maina who also coached her, unfairly wants half of the earnings.

Kabuu finished top-5 at the London, Chicago and Tokyo Marathons. The now 40-year-old earned gold during the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games 10,000m and bronze in the 5000m.
Kabuu testified that their relationship was strained by deception, financial control, and manipulation. This eventually led to the downfall of their marriage.

Kabuu said that she did provide money for Maina to support their two kids. While she travelled internationally earning money racing, she left her credit card. Maina was her unpaid coach and also earned money as a police officer. However, Kabuu claimed that Maina once faked his own hostage-taking. He allegedly did this to ransom his own wife, only to “release himself” when Kabuu involved the police.
They divorced in 2020.
Kabuu owns several properties and assets.
