Ugandans Sarah Chelangat and Joshua Cheptegei won their respective races at the TCS World 10K. They are the first athletes from their country to take TCS World 10K titles. They each won $26,000 USD.
Women’s race
Chelangat immediately took off. And extended the lead as the race rolled along, from gun to tape.
Chelangat increased her pace once she dropped the field and hit the halfway mark with 15:23 showing on the clock. At this time, she had a half-minute lead on Kenyan Cintia Chepngeno, and Ethiopians Guteni Shanko and Asmarech Anley. The gap continued to widen throughout.
Chelangat ran alone and therefore did not get an opportunity to set the event record. She broke the tape at 31:07. Chepngeno fought hard with Shanko for second place. They finished in 32:04 and 32:06, respectively.
Men’s race
Unlike the women’s race, the men put up a fight. During the early kilometres, a dozen or so runners were together. It was not until halfway into the race that the lead group was down to six athletes, led by Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay at 14:01 at 5km.
Five athletes, led by Joshua Cheptegei, crossed the 8km point in 22:35.

With the finish fast approaching, Cheptegei brought the pace down and was followed by Eritrean Saymon Tesfagiorgis Amanuel. The 17-year-old holds the Eritrean record of 27:10 from Lille, France in March.
Cheptegei kicked hard to the line to take the race in 27:53. Tesfagiorgis finished second two seconds back. Kenyan Vincent Lagat took third in 28:02.
