American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson busted the rust on Sunday, as she did last year, by not being in peak form early. She will be saving her 10-something sprints for the lead-up to the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

In Tokyo, during the Seiko Golden Grand Prix 2025, she finished fourth in the 100 metres event, clocking a pedestrian 11.47 seconds. In 2024, the now 25-year-old had performances as slow as 11.23 — she will likely return to form, fit as ever.

Australian Bree Rizzo won in a time of 11.38. Finishing in second place was Terri Twanisha in 11.42. Canada’s Sade McCreath took third in 11.46. McCreath holds a personal best of 11.21, Rizzo 11.23, Twanisha has run as fast as a legal 10.82.

All five finishers behind Richardson were Japanese, all within 11.56 and 11.82 seconds and 10.74 wind-aided.

Richardson has been known to start her seasons low and end them on a low. During the Tokyo race, she appeared mechanically rusty and not sharp. However, none of the athletes in the race appeared to be in top form.
