Sifan Hassan moved off the track and onto the roads to take on the marathon in 2023. She re-wrote the rulebook by winning her debut in London, then followed up that effort with a win in Chicago. On Saturday night in Los Angeles, the two-time Olympic gold medallist returned to the track in the 5000m distance event clocking a 14:58.83 performance for the win. For Hassan the 12.5-lap performance is not fast, perhaps for the former Ethiopian, now Dutch athlete, it was a rust buster.

In essence, it was a solo effort. There were no pacers.

Australian Natalie Rule took second with a 15:07.00 clocking. Amy-Eloise Neale of Great Britain finished third in the time of 15:07.38.

Hassan has run as fast as 14:13.42. Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay holds the world record with her 14:00.21 performance, which she set in Eugene, Oregon in Sept. 2023 at the Diamond League’s Prefontaine Classic. The Olympic standard is 14:52.00 or be ranked top 43 globally.

Hassan raced the Tokyo Marathon in March. While running an impressive debut in London winning in the time of 2:18:33 followed up with a 2:13:44 in Chicago. She ran 2:18:05 in Tokyo to finish fourth.

For her preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, there may be much more coming from Hassan in the following weeks. As she has medalled in the 1500m and is a two-time marathon champion, who knows which events she will settle for this summer.
