Twin Cities In Motion (TCM) announced Tuesday that beginning in 2027, the iconic race weekend will shift from its traditional early October date to a new mid-October schedule. The event will now take place between Oct. 10 and Oct. 17 annually to secure cooler, safer racing conditions for participants.

For 45 years, the marathon weekend has been anchored to the first Sunday in October. However, a multi-year review — prompted by extreme heat that forced the cancellation of the 2023 races and reinforced by elevated Event Alert System readings in subsequent years — revealed that mid-October offers a more stable and runner-friendly weather profile.

Long-term climate data indicate that even modest drops in average highs, lows, and overnight temperatures can significantly reduce heat-related medical risks.

“Protecting the health of every runner, from first-timers to elites, is our top priority,” said TCM co-medical directors Dr. Jacob Kastner and Dr. David Supik in a joint statement. “Even modest cooling temperature changes can significantly reduce physiological strain, improve hydration balance, and lower the risk of serious medical events. This means more people finishing safely and breaking personal records.”

The decision was made in collaboration with climatologists, public safety agencies, medical partners, and local stakeholders. The event is a massive economic driver for the region, generating nearly $50 million annually. It welcomes more than 30,000 registrants from all 50 American states and over 24 countries, drawing 300,000 spectators to the course stretching from Minneapolis to the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul.

Race director Ed Whetham noted that the change takes into account the high volume of debutants tackling the distance.

“We have a large field of first-timers every year, with about 40 to 45 per cent of our marathoners taking on the distance for the very first time,” Whetham said. “Shifting the date gives us a much better shot at ideal weather, which keeps participants safe and helps them accomplish the finish line experience they worked for.”

Whetham added that extreme heat places a massive strain on local medical and public safety resources. “Making this shift reduces that impact on our city partners and is the right move for everyone involved.”

Organizers also noted an aesthetic benefit to the postponement: Minnesota’s autumn leaves are peaking later than they did when the event was founded.

“Safety comes first, but experience matters too,” said Dean Orton, president of Twin Cities In Motion. “Cooler conditions and peak fall colour are part of what make Marathon Weekend special.

“Minnesota weather will always keep us humble, but mid-October offers meaningful gains in the probability of safer, more ideal conditions.”

Subject to final permit approvals, the future dates for the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend will be Oct. 15–17, 2027; Oct. 13–15, 2028; Oct. 12–14, 2029; Oct. 11–13, 2030; and Oct. 10–12, 2031.

Twin Cities In Motion is a non-profit organization that directs dozens of events annually. Alongside its charitable partners, TCM regularly raises and contributes more than $1 million annually to community causes.
