The University of Cincinnati track and field team closed out action at the Lyles/Wood Invitational Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky., with two Bearcats recording all-time Top 10 marks, including Sam Meece, who smashed his own freshman record in the discus, and Hannah Markel, who joined the Top 10 in the women’s 1,500m run. The meet, which is the penultimate event of the regular season, saw the Bearcats also win three more events while tallying 18 total personal-best marks, including 10 by the women and eight by the men.
// MEECE MAULS DISCUS MARK
In the final event of the meet, Meece had a big throw in the seeded section of the men’s discus as he placed third overall with a best of 53.45m (175-04). That mark not only put him third in the meet, but also moved him up to third on the latest descending order list for the American Athletic Conference. With that mark, Meece also improved his collegiate best by 5’ 7” to move up to #6 all-time in program history while also posting a huge improvement over his UC freshman record.
// MARKEL JOINS TOP 10
For the second meet in a row, Markel had a solid day on the track, posting not on a personal-best time in her race, but also finding a home for that time on the program’s all-time Top 10. One week removed from running the #7 time in the 5,000m race, Markel was back at it in the 1,500m run as she posted a time of 4:39.87 to move onto the list at #8. Markel placed 14th overall in the race and moved her into the Top 25 on the current order lists for the AAC.
// MITXELENA GRABS SECOND WIN OF THE WEEKEND
One day after winning the long jump competition, Irati Mitxelena was back to work on the runway as the international standout bounced her way to victory in the triple jump to give her a sweep of the horizontal jumps for the Bearcats. Saturday, Mitxelena posted a best of 12.46m (40-10.50) to claim victory.
// EVENT WINNERS
Speaking of victories, the UC women claim wins in two more events with Tiona Lattimore securing the top finish in the 200m dash and Allie Plybon winning the open section of the pole vault with a personal-best clearance. Lattimore was the victor in an event that featured 43 women as the Bearcats sprints specialist raced to a time of 23.71, just off her personal best of 23.60 that she ran last week at Auburn.
In the open section of the women’s pole vault, Plybon led a 1-2-4 finish in the event for the Bearcats as she cleared 3.72m (12-02.50), bettering her previous best of 3.70m that she cleared earlier this year. She followed in the standings by Rachel Coghill in second (3.57m/11-08.50) and Sadie Brass in fourth (3.42m (11-02.50). Coghill’s mark also was a season-best.
// BEVY OF BESTS
Several other Bearcats recorded personal-best marks on the day, including all three women in the 100m hurdles as Katie Straus (14.72), Maggie Loeffler (15.09) and Grace Winckowski (15.11) all posted career bests. Staying on the track, the men’s distance corps got in on the action as three posted PRs on the day. First, in the 1,500m run, Matt Stump and Nick Grismer both recorded PRs as the Stump placed seventh overall in 3:57.48 and Grismer 17th at 4:02.00. In the 5,000m run, rookie Ryan Guenthner broke the 15-minute barrier, running a personal best of 14:57.73. In the open section of the men’s discus, Danny Jones posted an improvement of 3’7” in the event after sending the plate out to 46.14m (151-04) to finish third in the meet.
// ON DECK
