The 27-year-old Brooklyn, NS native earned a silver medal at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships. She finished fourth at the 2022 Eugene edition at Hayward Field. In March at the Birmingham World Indoor Championships Mitton took gold with her 20.22m put. During the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, she took silver with a 19.03m put. That same year Mitton became the NACAC champion with a 20.15m toss.
The Paris Olympic standard is 18.80m. Thirty-two female and 32 male shot put athletes will be accepted into the Games. Mitton is a shoe-in or perhaps not a shot in the dark.
The world record is 22.63m by Russian Natalya Lisovskaya from 1987.
Russian doping whistleblower, Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, stated that Lisovskaya and her husband Yuriy Sedykh were heavy users of steroids. This was never proven and Sedykh denies the allegations.
