The Swiss sportswear brand On has added some legitimate horsepower to its roster, securing collegiate phenom Elsingi Kipruto to a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreement. Kipruto, currently busy rewriting Louisville’s record book as a freshman, arrives with the sort of résumé that makes NCAA distance coaches stare longingly into the middle distance.
Raised in Rongit village in Nandi County—one of Kenya’s most reliable exporters of endurance talent—Kipruto comes by the sport honestly. His mother, Teresa Chepngetich, and father, former 800-metre runner Gilbert Kipchoge, provided the genetic scaffolding; the rest he has built himself with a disciplined upbringing and a seamless transition to American collegiate racing.
Calling his debut season “impressive” undersells the point. Since landing in Louisville, Kipruto has treated the Cardinals’ distance standards like polite suggestions. He obliterated the 5000-metre school record with a world-class 13:15.74 and followed it with a 27:29.83 over 10,000 metres—times that would make most seasoned pros shift uncomfortably in their spikes.
Within the ACC, he has been something of a one-man weather system, sweeping the conference’s Men’s Cross Country and Indoor Freshman of the Year honours. Add First-Team All-American status and a program-record 7:46.76 in the indoor 3000m, and you have one of the most versatile young distance runners currently toeing a start line anywhere in the NCAA.
“It is incredibly rare to see an athlete demonstrate such elite versatility so early in their career,” said Libby Davidson, Athlete Manager at On. “Whether it’s on the cross-country course or the indoor track, Elsingi’s competitive spirit is undeniable. On and off the track, his positive attitude is contagious. We are proud to welcome him to the On family.”
For On, it’s a savvy signing. For Kipruto, it’s simply the next stride in what is already shaping up to be a long run of significance.
