The Greeks not only brought us the Olympic Games and democracy, but they also taught us the metaphor of the phoenix that burns and is reborn anew. In other symbolism, it has been used to represent resurrection and the ability to find new life after symbolic death. The trope is frequently used to encourage change and beginning anew.

The USATF Championships and Doha Diamond League meet are now offering more prize money to their respective events in 2026. Interestingly, the USATF is offering more money for the Los Angeles meet after the failure of the Grand Slam Track league (GST), which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Perhaps GST was a sacrificial phoenix.

Doha Diamond League

There is now a $5000 bonus available to any athlete who breaks any Doha Diamond League meet record. The meeting takes place on May 8.

The league started in 2025 with $9.84mn awarded in prize money across the series as a whole, which is the largest prize pool in Diamond League history. Doha is carrying on with its meeting this spring.

Mohammed al-Fadala, Qatar Athletics Federation president, said, “The Doha Meeting has established itself as one of the leading Wanda Diamond League fixtures and feedback from our athletes, their coaches and their managers, repeatedly tells us that our exceptional hospitality is a key factor in them wanting to return.

The Mazzraty Doha Meeting is the opening meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League. The series comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field across four different continents. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

USATF Championships

For 2026, the USATF is continuing to improve athlete compensation, notably offering prize money at the 2026 Indoor Championships ($6,000–$1,000 for 1st–5th).

Additionally, the new USATF Lone Star Grand Prix on June 6, 2026, in College Station will feature over $200,000 in prize money, with a second meet in Los Angeles.

Other meets offering money

World Athletics Ultimate Championship (2026)

A new, biennial, end-of-season championship scheduled to begin in 2026 to act as a rival to the Olympics in terms of prestige and money.

Total Prize Money: A $10 million USD total prize pool.

Gold Medal Prize: Winners of each event will receive $150,000 US. Which is three times the amount offered for a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

ATHLOS (Women’s Only)
Debuting in September 2024 and continuing, this league, backed by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is focused exclusively on women’s track.

Prize Money: Offers $60,000 to winners, which is higher than the 2024 Diamond League final prize.

Other Significant Increases

Olympic Games (Paris 2024): World Athletics became the first federation to pay prize money at the Olympics, providing $50,000 to gold medallists, with plans to extend this to silver and bronze medalists for Los Angeles 2028.

National Track & Field Tour (Canada): The 2025 tour included various meets with prize money, such as the Harry Jerome Track Classic, Victoria Track Classic and Edmonton Athletics Invitational.

Perhaps the new investments in athletics represent the rise of track and field once again.
