Saturday, April 19, American Taylor Roe ran the B.A.A. Boston 5K in a time of 14:57. She finished third behind Ethiopian Gela Hambese, who won in 14:53. Finishing second was Kenyan Grace Loibach in 14:55.
Random 14:57s
American Emily Sisson also ran a 14:57 road 5km event on Thursday, April 17, in Kilkenny, Ireland. It was a personal best performance on the road; however, she has run as fast as 14:53.84 on the track, which she accomplished in 2021.
Sisson’s performance coincides with Jane Hedengren’s recent performance on the track, which was 14:57.93 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, where she ran an NCAA record on the same day.

Kenyan Pamela Kosgei, who was running for the University of New Mexico, won in 14:52.45. Taking second was Lexy Halladay-Lowry with BYU clocking 14:52.93.
Sisson’s performance was a strong one, considering she turned to running the marathon distance in 2019. She has held the American marathon record since Chicago 2022 at 2:18:29.
Finishing second in Kilkenny was Ide Nic Dhomhaill. She is an over-40s master and clocked in a 16:00 finish. Taking third was Orla Duffy in 16:38.
Dhomhaill’s master’s performance is nearly identical to Canadian Natasha Wodak’s 16:01 5km win on April 13, which she ran during the Bazan Bay 5K in Sidney, BC. Wodak is also a master’s 40-plus athlete. She also happens to hold the Canadian marathon record at 2:23:12 from the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
Zoe Hamel and Marisha Thompson finished second and third, respectively, during the Bazan Bay 5K.
National records
The American 5000m record is 14:19.45 by Alicia Monson from July 2023. Meanwhile, the 5km road record was set at the 2015 B.A.A. Boston 5K by Molly Huddle. She continues to hold the American record from the 2015 edition with her 14:50 performance.
The Irish 5km record is 14:55.4 set by Sonia O’Sullivan in 2002. Two years earlier, O’Sullivan set the 5000m record at 14:41.02 during the Sydney Olympic Games, where she won a silver medal.
The Canadian record in the 5km was set by Emilie Mondor at the 2004 Carlsbad 5000 with her 15:16 running. Gabriela DeBues-Stafford holds the 5000m record from 2019 at 14:44.12, which she set during the Brussels Diamond League meet. She holds seven national records.
