Gabriele “Gabe” (née Anderson) Grunewald left an indelible mark on the global running community and the greater sports community. She was brave in her fights against cancer.
The world is a better place because she was in it. Sadly, she ran out of time in her fight against the disease on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 32 years of age.
Sports Illustrated’s Tim Layden did fine work with an article on her here: https://www.si.com/olympics/2019/06/11/gabe-grunewald-runner-cancer-battle-inspiration
I had the opportunity to interview her in 2014, after two successful battles against the disease – she went on to improve her 5,000m best after the two fights: https://athleticsillustrated.com/gabriele-grunewald-interview/
Personal bests:

1500m – 4:01.48
Mile (1609m) – 4:27.94
3,000m – 8:42.64
5,000m – 15:19:01
