Team Global Sports Communication looks back on very successful Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Our athletes have won a total of 15 medals, from which 6 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze. The Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were our most successful Olympic Games after Sydney 2000.
Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia won the Olympic 10,000m on the first day of the Olympic Games. She not only won gold, but also broke the 23-year-old world record by running 29:17.45. One week later she won the bronze medal in the 5000m. Almaz Ayana: “I am happy with a gold and bronze medal and of course the world record, but it is a pity I got stomach stitches during the 5000m!” On the third day Caterine Ibarguen wrote history for Colombia by winning the Olympic triple jump title in a world leading performance of 15.17m. She put the crown on all her hard work of the past four years after her silver medal in London. Kenyan Faith Kipyegon already had an impressive list of championships medals. After becoming World Youth, World Junior, Commonwealth Champion and silver medalist at the World Championships in Beijing, she added an Olympic gold medal to her palmares. She defeated Genzebe Dibaba and Jennifer Simpson with a fast last 800m. Pre-race favorite Eliud Kipchoge lived up to the expectations and won Olympic gold in the men’s marathon. After a bronze medal in Athens and silver in Beijing, he has now won the most special medal of his career. Race walker Zheng Wang claimed the gold medal in the 20km after finishing third at the London Olympics. His countrywoman Liu Hong also won gold in the 20km race walk.
Our athletes from South Africa won two silver medals in Rio de Janeiro. Javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen peaked at the right moment and won the most special medal of her career and Luvo Manyonga surprised many by winning the silver medal in the long jump. Orlando Ortega won a silver medal in the 110m hurdles and is proud to have won his first medal for Spain. World Champion Hyvin Kiyeng won the silver medal in the women’s 3000mSC.
Tomorrow we will start a new road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. We are looking forward starting this journey together with our athletes.
