UK Athletics has been fined £350,000 (€410,000). The organization was also ordered £44,000 (€52,000) in costs after Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei was killed when equipment collapsed on him while training in east London.
The shot-putter died when a metal cage gave way as he prepared for the World Para Athletics Championships in 2017. Judge Richard Marks described Mr Hayayei’s death as “tragic, untimely and wholly avoidable.”
UKA’s former head of sport, Keith Davies, was ordered to complete 175 hours of community service, as he was responsible for the equipment that had been assembled without base plates.
Strong gusts of wind collapsed the age. It collapsed onto Hayayei, who died from head injuries after being struck by a heavy metal bar. He was 36 years old and suffered from cerebral palsy.
Hayayei, who competed previously for the United Arab Emirates in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, had been training for the world championships.
He was married with five children.
