On Tuesday, June 16, the 65th Golden Spikes meeting will take place in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The competition will be fierce between Gout Gout and Noah Lyles, but will Werro lead Broeders-Bol to an international-level result?
Broeders-Bol versus Audrey Werro
The question is not who will win between 22-year-old Audrey Werro of Switzerland and Holland’s Femke Broeders-Bol, but will Broeders-Bol benefit from the pacing of the third-fastest 800 metre runner in history? Werro was shocked by beating Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and running the third-fastest 800m in history. In so doing, she ran the fastest time in 43 years, a meet record, national record and a giant new personal best. Also, she defeated the defending World and Olympic champion; it was a lot.
Hodgkinson said, “That won’t happen again.”
She must know where she went wrong, tactically speaking. The 800m is a fast race about quick decisions. Both athletes led at various points in the race. Perhaps leading after 600m was early for Hodgkinson. Hodgkinson will have to change her tactics to better Werro; how that plays out is anybody’s guess.
One thing that is very likely at the Golden Spikes is a new meeting record. Currently, it sits at 1:54.77 by South Africa’s Caster Semenya. In 2018, she set the still-standing national record at that meet.
While there is talk of Werro going for the world record, it is unlikely to happen in Ostrava, as she will need competition, right to the line, to pull that off.
For 26-year-old Broeders-Bol, while she has a faster 400m personal best, due to her focus on the 400m and the 400m hurdles, the question is whether she can manage the aerobic output and turn on the jets at exactly the right time. After all, this race is about quick, meaningful decisions.
Putting pressure now on Broeders-Bol is not fair. She is up against the third-fastest 800m runner in athletics history. But Broeders-Bol did run 1:59.07 indoors and has more training time to load the aerobic engine and practise the transition to anaerobic energy somewhere after 600m. When does she allow the gorilla on the back? We will find out.
Broeders-Bol holds a flat 400m best of 49.17, which is the indoor world record. She also has a 50.95 best in the hurdles, arguably a better performance.
Werro’s 400m is fast for an 800m runner, which sits at 51.03. But her 1:53.98 800m from the Stockholm Diamond League meet last week puts her in the world lead position, early this outdoor track season and a major target for her competition as the summer plays out.
Gout versus Lyles
Meanwhile, Gout Gout of Australia and Noah Lyles of the US will face off over the 150m. Gout is coming off a defeat in Stockholm and will look to challenge Lyles for the win and for redemption.
The ever-popular and divisive Lyles is currently the world’s fastest sprinter and the King of the 200m. In addition to eight World Championship titles, including four consecutive golds in the 200m, Lyles also won an Olympic gold medal in the 100m in Paris 2024. He started the season with a fast 19.91 in Gainesville, Florida, on April 17.
Gout set a new personal best and national record at the last Golden Spike meet and has all the makings of becoming the successor to the legendary Usain Bolt. The 18-year-old sprinting prodigy clocked an Australian World U20 record 19.67, and leads the year’s lists.
Shades of Michael Johnson versus Donovan Bailey in Toronto. Let’s hope they both finish the race and make an exciting to-the-line challenge. In June of 1997, Bailey of Canada ran 14.99 seconds in the showdown; Johnson of the US pulled a hamstring mid-race. This took place one month before Lyles and 10 years before Gout were born.
Gout made his Diamond League debut in Oslo on June 10, finishing sixth in the 200m with a time of 20.60. Before this, he set a stunning World Under-20 record of 19.67 seconds in the 200m at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney on April 12, 2026.
Which Gout will show up in Ostrava? Only time will tell.
