The Birell Prague Grand Prix 10K is shaping up to be an absolute burner this September, with RunCzech organizers dropping a powerhouse preliminary elite list today. Expect standard-setting depth as top-tier talent from Africa and South America converge on the notoriously fast Czech capital.

Kwizera headlines men’s field

Leading the charge is Burundi’s Rodrigue Kwizera. The Spain-based standout is no stranger to the RunCzech circuit. Boasting a blazing 10K road personal best of 26:56—good for 13th all-time—Kwizera already etched his name into local lore this past spring. He clocked a stunning 58:14 to shatter the Generali Prague Half Marathon course record, taking down the previous mark held by reigning world half-marathon champion Sebastian Sawe.

Kwizera is a legitimate threat to eclipse Geoffrey Koech’s 2019 event record of 27:02. The cross-country powerhouse showed terrifying fitness in May, dropping a mind-boggling 26:01 in Madrid. While that performance was ineligible for world-record status due to the course’s downhill gradient, it signals that Koech’s mark is on borrowed time.

He won’t have a solo time trial, though. Uganda’s Harbert Kibet enters with the fastest official time in the world this year, a blistering 26:39 dropped in Castellón, Spain, back in February.

Adding serious international intrigue is South American record holder Santiago Catrofe of Uruguay. Possessing a 27:16 lifetime best, Catrofe is an ultra-versatile operator on both the turf and the track, and has openly stated he’s targeting his own national record in Prague. Kenya’s Victor Kipruto Kiprono (27:10) and Owen Kapkama—who notched a 58:59 half-marathon PB in Prague six months ago—round out a dangerous vanguard.

Amebaw and Gitonga twins are ready to push the pace

On the women’s side, Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw leads the marquee. Fresh off a dominant victory in the 5,000-metres at the Rome Diamond League, Amebaw carries a 29:56 personal best and sits comfortably among the world’s elite.

She will face a fierce rival in Kenya’s Caroline Gitonga. Gitonga is the reigning Generali Prague Half Marathon champion and owns a faster 10K lifetime best of 29:34, set in Castellón earlier this year. In a fascinating narrative twist, Caroline will be joined on the start line by her twin sister, Purity Kajuju Gitonga, an formidable athlete in her own right with a 30:04 credit.

The women will have their sights set on the legendary 29:43 course record established in 2017 by global superstar Joyciline Jepkosgei—a time that still stands as the 13th fastest in history.

The depth doesn’t stop there. Kenyan compatriots Clare Ndiwa, who clocked 29:49 for third in Valencia this year, and Miriam Chebet (30:08 in Valencia) ensure the pace will be relentless from the gun.

Race Note: The Birell Prague Grand Prix holds a World Athletics Elite Label, ensuring rigorous anti-doping protocols, precise course measurement, and a world-class field.

Organizers expect to release the complete elite field, including domestic talent and further international additions, in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to Athletics Illustrated for deep-dive previews as the September race weekend approaches.
