Another big day Saturday, for Canada in the sport of athletics during the 2016 indoor season with Canadian Pole Vault record holder and world champion Shawn Barber of Toronto winning his second consecutive meet in a week. This time he won the Glasgow Grand Prix with a vault of 5.89m. Last weekend he won the Athlone International in Athlone, Ireland clearing 5.77m. Britain’s Luke Cutts finished second with a 5.70m performance while Poland’s Robert Sobera ended up third at 5.60m.
And as previously reported Eganville, Ontario’s Melissa Bishop bettered her national record one week after breaking Diane Cummins’ long-standing 2:00.66 in the 800-metre distance, dropping it to 2:00.60 last weekend in the Athlone International. Saturday she improved it to 2:00.19, winning both races convincingly, the latter at the Glasgow Grand Prix.
Britain’s Laura Muir finished second in the time of 2:00.70, while Joanna Jozwik of Poland ended up third with her 2:00.88 result.
Finally Toronto’s Mo Ahmed broke Kevin Sullivan’s 3,000-metre national record at the Millrose Games in New York with his 7:40.11 performance, to finish fifth in a race that featured his training partner Ryan Hill who is a fellow member of the Bowerman Track Club. Hill won in the time of 7:38.82.
Ahmed, who has run a little in the shadow of Black Creek, BC’s Cam Levins, now owns the national indoor 3,000m record as well as the national 5,000m record for outdoors, which is 13:10.00 from his run on September 11, 2015 in Brussels, Belgium.
Levins finished in 10th position with his time of 7:45.44. He owns a personal best of 7:41.59 from 2014. He also is the national record holder for the 10,000m at 27:07.51.
Hassan Mead and Eric Jenkins finished second and third in the times of 7:38.85 and 7:39.43.
