Femke Bol of the Netherlands recorded the third-fastest 400 metre hurdles time in history on Sunday.

Bol’s run is a new European record, dropping her below the 51-second threshold for the first time to 50.95 seconds.

At the 2024 Resisprint athletics meeting in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the world champion responded to rival Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone who improved her world record in Eugene two weeks ago to 50.65.

At Resisprint, finishing in second place was Adekoya Kemi of Burundi in the time of 53.41 seconds. Jessie Knight from Great Britain finished third, clocking 54.59 seconds.

The women’s 400mh looks to be a two-women event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The event is dominated globally by two 24-year-old women, Bol and McLaughlin-Levrone (SML). Of the top 20 all-time performances three athletes are listed. SML nine times, Bol eight times and Dalilah Muhammad three times. Three of the five fastest times were done by SML. It has been three years since Muhammad has performed at her best.

The 34-year-old American clocked a 54.16 run two weeks ago at Hayward Field and finished well out of the top three spots at those US Olympic Trials.
