The Alliance union — The Confederation General of Labor (CGT) — announced that the French prime minister’s office and the economy ministry are holding back special Olympic bonus payments promised to police up to €1,900 ($2,032). Therefore, the union has threatened disruptions that may occur during the Torch Relay and beyond.

The torch relay is scheduled to take place in Marseille on Wednesday, May 8. The handover ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece, on Friday, April 26.
According to the Economic Research Institute, the average salary range for a Police Officer is between €35,752 and €61,289 or €24/hr.
More threats
The nation’s air traffic controllers have also declared a strike scheduled for Thursday. The national mint, responsible for making the Olympic medals, has also gone on strike. The mint staff are also demanding bonuses due to the strenuous nature of their work.
In March CGT organized labour disruptions in various cities including Lille, Bordeaux, Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes, and Toulouse.
SNCTA, the largest union representing air traffic controllers in France threatened strike action in March. However, a deal came too late to roll back cancellations ordered by France’s DGAC civil aviation authority, meaning many flights were grounded starting April 25. This action could affect 75 per cent of flights.
To head off mass labour disruption, the French government has tabled and adopted a Bill to ban transport strikes for set periods each year to avoid disruption during major events like Paris 2024.
