Italy finished on top of the medal table as 15-year-old sprint sensation Kelly Doualla starred again as the European Athletics U20 Championships came to a thrilling conclusion in Tampere on Sunday (10).
The Azzuri won the women’s 4x100m relay with Doualla on the final leg, the men’s 110m hurdles through Matteo Togni and the men’s triple jump courtesy of Francesco Crotti on the final day of action to top the medal table with six gold medals.
Innes FitzGerald of Great Britain smashed a 32-year-old championship record in the women’s 3000m, and Norway’s Håkon Moe Berg won the men’s 1500m as both athletes sealed superb distance doubles.
Croatia’s Jana Koscak added European U20 gold to her world U20 title in the women’s heptathlon in a thrilling battle with Hungary’s Sarolta Kriszt.
But it was still a golden day for Hungary with Lilliana Batori and Bori Rozsahegyi winning the women’s high jump and long jump titles, respectively.
In the other final day relays, France won an incident-packed men’s 4x100m and the women’s 4x400m, plus 400m hurdles gold medallist Michal Rada brought home the baton for a memorable Czechia victory in the men’s 4x400m.
There was more French success with Elijah Pasquier winning the men’s high jump with a national U20 record.
There were also final day gold medals for Switzerland’s Jil Sanchez (women’s 100m hurdles), Greece’s Maria Rafailidou (women’s shot put), Germany’s Jana Marie Becker (women’s 800m), Türkiye’s Kiyasettin Kara (men’s 3000m steeplechase), the Netherlands’ Elise de Jong (women’s pole vault) and Spanish duo Rafael Mahiques (men’s javelin) and Joan Querol (men’s 10,000m race walk). The latter in a new championship record.
