A familiar name will be flying around the track at Centre Claude-Robillard in an athletics competition, but unlike her famous father, Katherine Surin will be running a much longer distance. Katherine, the daughter of Bruny Surin, will race in the invitational 400-metres at the AC Indoor Open, March 14 to 16.
Athletics Canada – You had a great 2013 season representing Quebec at the Canada Games and taking home a bronze medal in the 400-metres. What did you enjoy most about last season?
Katherine Surin – I had an injury that prevented me from competing at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships. It was supposed to be my first national level competition so I was really looking forward to run the 400-metres, the 200-metres as well as the relays. I was very disappointed when the physiotherapist told me it would be better if I withdrew myself from the event. At the Canada Games I was really hoping to make the final and set a personal best before the end of the season. I surprised myself and managed to do both. Standing on the podium in front of a lot of people is what I enjoyed the most about last season.
AC – After last year’s season, what are you working on in your training for 2014? What goals are you focused on for this year?
KS – I really want to run under 55-seconds (in the 400-metres). I also want to participate at the World Junior Championships and all major age class track competitions this summer.
AC – What are your plans for university? There must be plenty of schools in Canada and in the United States who would love to have you on their squad?
KS – I am currently looking for universities. There are a lot of interesting schools in Canada and in the United States that I would love to go to, as of right now nothing is decided. I am taking it slow to make sure I can find a school that has a great academic and athletic program.
The 2014 AC Indoor Open takes place in Montreal, Que., March 14 – 16 at Centre Claude-Robillard. The event serves as a Canadian Championship for youth and junior athletes and will feature a number of Olympians and World Championship national team members in invitational events.
