Grant Fisher bettered the world indoor 5000-metre record at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on February 14, 2025. The meeting took place at Boston University.

Born in Calgary, Alberta and raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan, the 27-year-old Fisher ran a stunning 12:44.09. In so doing, he bettered the world record by Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele and his 12:49.60 set in 2004.

This performance comes just seven days after Fisher’s world record-breaking 3000m performance at the Millrose Games in New York. He clocked 7:22.91 in that race.

During the 5000m race, Fisher, with the pacemaking help of Henry Mcluckie and DJ Principe, the athletes went after a 12:42 finish. They smashed the first 1600m in 4:05.01 and passed 3000m in 7:39.16. At this time, the pacemakers retired. Fisher continued on his own navigating slower runners to close with a kick over the final 200m lap in 29.28 seconds. As he crossed the finish line the crowd boisterously celebrated the performance.

Frenchman Jimmy Gressier finished second in 12:54.92. He took the European indoor (short track) record with that performance. Sudanese athlete competing in the NCAA for the University of Arkansas, Yaseen Abdalla, took third in the time of 13:09.99. This performance is the eighth-fastest in NCAA history.
