The University of British Columbia’s Maria Bernard today won her 3,000m steeplechase event at the 2015 Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, California. She finished in a new personal best time of 9:53.71.
The Calgary native competed in the Invitational A race and finished first against many competitors from NCAA Division 1 schools.
Today’s performance is the 10th-fastest in the world so far this year.
The 22-year-old Bernard competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Her previous best was 9:55.69 from June 9, 2014. She won the NAIA national cross country championships on November 22nd last year.
The top-four times for 2015 came from one single race in Melbourne, Australia on March 21st of this year. The world lead is held by Australian Madeline Heiner with her performance of 9:31.03. The 27-year-old has also run as fast as 32:44.71 for 10,000m and 15:21.09 for 5,000m.
