Edmonton – The second stop on the 2014 National Track League (NTL2014) circuit is Edmonton’s International Track Classic (EITC) this weekend. Last year the EITC ranked top 30 in the world by All-Athletics’ worldwide competition rankings. This year the event could crack the top 20 with its greatest lineup ever.
The 2014 EITC is a two-day competition; an open competition is slated for Saturday July 5, providing an opportunity for athletes to qualify into the invitational section held Sunday July 6. Athletes who finish first in the following open events will receive a lane in Sunday’s invitational: Men’s 100m, 200m, 800m / Women’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m).

The EITC will feature competitors from 13 different countries, including athletes from some of the top track and field nations in the world such as Jamaica, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Headlining the competition are Canadians Aaron Brown, Derek Drouin, Brianne Theisen-Eaton, and Angela Whyte. This season Brown has broken both the indoor and outdoor Canadian record in the 200-metres. Drouin won bronze at both the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 World Championships in the high jump. Thiesen-Eaton won silver in combined-events at the 2013 World Championships and 2014 World Indoor Championships. Whyte, from Edmonton, has competed in the 100-metre hurdles at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. She was a finalist in the event at the 2013 World Championships.
Canadian athletes will face stiff competition from some of the world’s best. Leading the way are Justin Gatlin, LaShawn Merritt and Wallace Spearmon of the United States, and Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic and Warren Weir of Jamaica.
NTL prize money is available to all competing athletes. The financial prize purse is available to athletes who break Canadian records (Canadian athletes only) and / or National Track League records, as well as athletes who meet the IAAF A and B standards. For more on the NTL prize purse click here.
