The world’s best meet just keeps getting better. Five of the top distance runners are confirmed for the 50th Prefontaine Classic on July 5. The race will feature the current world record holders in the women’s 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, both of which were set at the Pre Classic.
Women’s 5000m headliners
Gudaf Tsegay is the current world record holder in the 5,000m, which she ran at the 2023 Pre Classic. Beatrice Chebet is the reigning Olympic champion in both the 5,000m and 10,000m, and currently holds the world record in the 5K on the road and the 10,000m on the track, which was set at the 2024 Pre Classic. Medina Eisa holds the area U20 record in the 5K on the road and is currently ranked second in the world over 5,000m on the track. Ejgayehu Taye is ranked third in the world over 5,000m and is a three-time global bronze medalist with a personal best of 14:12.98, ran at the 2022 Pre Classic. Tsigie Gebreselama is the defending Pre Classic 5,000m champion and currently ranked No. 4 in the world, with a personal best of 14:18.74 set at Hayward Field.
