Claudia Hollingsworth was reinstated as the Australian 1500 metre national champion after being disqualified for making contact with race leader Jessica Hull, who fell to the track at the 2026 Australian Championships in Olympic Park in Sydney on April 10.
The race started as if the athletes were going to run a typically fast metric mile at a national championships, but then immediately slowed after the first 100m. The pace was a jog for well over 1000m before Hull took matters into her own hands and dropped the pace to string out the closely packed field of contenders.

Hull was holding her lead, while Hollingsworth pressed to pass her on the inside with less than 100m to go on the front straight. She appeared to clip Hull from behind. Hull staggered and then fell face down onto the track. Hollingsworth, the fourth-seeded athlete, ended up winning. After Hull jogged in across the line, Hollingsworth could be heard on camera repeatedly apologizing.
Sarah Billings and Abbey Caldwell finished in second and third positions.
“That was not what anybody wanted to see,” said Bruce McAvaney, commenting during the broadcast.
“Claudia does not look too happy here because she knows that the reason why Jess fell was that she got boxed in and she tried to get out,” Tamsyn Lewis-Manou added.
Hollingsworth, at the age of 20, entered the race with a personal best that she had just set at the end of March, 3:58.09. Whereas Hull is the national and Oceania record holder at an international level of 3:50.83. She owns a silver medal from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and a bronze from the Tokyo World Athletics Championships.
Hollingsworth reinstated
While there is no doubt that Hollingsworth, with some junior international experience, will be a strong international runner soon, at this time, there was no doubt that Hull was going to win. It could be argued that, given the very slow pace to over 1000m into the 1500m, it allowed a few athletes to run with Hull and be in position for a medal.
Hollingsworth was reinstated as champion with her finish time of 4:17.06. She was stripped of victory Friday night after two separate protests were made, including one from Caldwell.
In turn, Hollingsworth appealed, and on Saturday afternoon, Australian Athletics issued a statement saying she had been crowned the winner after a review of all “available footage.”
