Canadian Cameron Levins is ranked number nine in the Track and Field News’ annual World Ranking for 2014 for athletes who compete in the 10,000m distance.
Levins finished 11th in the 2012 London Olympic Games 10,000m, then followed that up with a bronze medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He holds the second fastest time in Canadian history with his personal best of 27:27.96, which he ran at the 2012 Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, California.
Levins from Black Creek on Vancouver Island has also run the second fastest 5,000m time in Canadian history with his 13:15.19, which he accomplished in 2013 in Eugene, Oregon.
The number one ranked 10,000m runner world-wide is teammate at Nike Oregon Project, Galen Rupp, who won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games behind Mo Farah, who has also trained with the Nike Oregon Project under Coach Alberto Salazar.
Some interesting top-10 rankings include banned drug cheat Justin Gatlin in the 100m, he is ranked number one for the distance, while the current world record holder Usain Bolt is not ranked in either the 100m or 200m. England’s Mo Farah is missing from the 10,000m, even though he is the reigning Olympic 10,000m champion, however, these rankings are for 2014.
Fellow Canadian Derek Drouin is ranked fourth of 10, he earned bronze in London and gold in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The Corunna, Ontario resident is the Canadian record holder with his best jump of 2.38m.
Canadian Shot putter Dylan Armstrong is notably missing, which is interesting as he has medalled in the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Track and Field Championships as well as the indoor version and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Again, in all fairness the rankings are for 2014, where he has been nursing an injury. Armstrong also holds the Canadian record of 22.21m from 2011 in Calgary, Alberta.
Sultana Frizell is ranked seventh in the Hammer Throw. She accomplished the Canadian record in May of 2014, throwing the distance of 75.73 m. The Perth, Ontario native is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and holds the Commonwealth Games record from Glasgow 2014. She is also a former shot putter and competed at an international level as a junior and as an under-23, as well as competing in the World University Championships (FISU).
Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Humboldt, Saskatchewan is ranked number two in the Heptathlon behind Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain. Theisen-Eaton took the gold medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games as well as silver at the 2013 IAAF World Track and Field Championships and silver during the 2014 indoor edition. She holds the Canadian record for the indoor version, the Pentathlon with her total points record of 4768.
Liz Gleadle is also ranked seventh, in the Javelin. She competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games finishing in 12th position.
