Marco Arop didn’t so much run an 800‑metre race at Foote Field; he had a confirmation of his seasonal coming-out party. The performance was equal parts velocity, resilience, and a reminder that he can give Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi a run for his money.

Arop stopped the clock at 1:42.13, a time that would headline most meets on its own, but here it served as a companion piece to the 1:41.84 he dropped in Paris two weeks earlier. Edmonton fans, many of whom remember him as the lanky St. Oscar Romero senior who wandered onto the track in 2014 and promptly discovered he was far better at running than posting up (in basketball), greeted him like the returning champion he is.

The Achilles tendon that has nagged him this season didn’t keep him from delivering a show. He admitted afterward that the pain flickers on and off, but on Sunday, it stayed quiet long enough for him to give the hometown crowd what they came for.

“I ran fast in Paris and I feel like I’m not quite sharp yet,” he said. “So it was really great to come back and replicate that at home. It’s amazing. I’d like to get 100 percent and sharper and maybe we can break that record.”

The city is celebrating the 25th anniversary of hosting the 2001 World Championships, a fitting backdrop for Arop, who arrived in Edmonton with his family in 2002 as refugees from Sudan, to run like he owns the place.

The anticipated showdown with Brandon Miller never materialized due to a late scratch, but Arop didn’t require company. Pacer Andrew Regnier delivered a crisp 49.8 through 400m, and the world bronze medallist carried the tempo from there.

Arop will now pause racing to train ahead of late‑season meets.

Sprint and hurdle fireworks

The meet produced fast times with conveyor‑belt regularity.

  • Sade McCreath — Canadian record in the women’s 100m prelim: 10.86 (+1.7)
  • Audrey Leduc — national champion, winning the final in 10.90 (+2.6)
  • Alia Armstrong — 100m hurdles in 12.50, then 11.00 for third in the 100m final
  • Jamar Marshall Jr. — 110m hurdles in 13.12 (+2.1)
  • Brandon Hicklin — men’s 100m in 9.85 (+2.6)

    400m battles

    • Christopher Morales Williams edged Justin Robinson, 44.44 to 44.45.
    • James Smith II ran a PB 48.68 in the 400m hurdles, a tidy tune‑up for USATF Outdoors.
    • Nicole Yeargin clocked 50.98, her fastest in five years.
    • Dinedye Denis of Côte d’Ivoire ran a PB 54.85 to win the women’s 400m hurdles.
    • Emma Sullivan (Kennesaw State) won the women’s 800m in 2:00.09, a personal best.

    Field event power

Foote Field’s record book didn’t survive the afternoon.

    • Sarah Mitton — 20.20m in the shot put, surpassing her own facility record.
    • Alex Jones — 77.86m in the hammer, sharpening up for the U.S. Championships.
    • Anthonett Nabwe — 76.25m to win the women’s hammer.
    • Tricia Madourie — 1.83m to take the women’s high jump.

    The Takeaway

Foote Field delivered two hours of racing that felt like a highlight reel stitched together in real time. Arop’s homecoming run was the emotional centrepiece, but nearly every event produced something worth circling.
