On Thursday, the Honolulu Marathon Society announced that they are cancelling the 2020 edition of their event.
In a media release posted on the event’s website, the society wrote.”After consulting with all our stakeholders, the City and County of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii and our sponsors, the Honolulu Marathon Association has decided that the appropriate and safest course of action is not to conduct the 2020 Honolulu Marathon, Start to Park 10-K and Kalakaua Merrie Mile in December. We understand that it has been difficult for you to train and to plan trips to Hawaii under these circumstances and we thank you for your patience in waiting for the final announcement.”
The Honolulu Marathon began in 1973. The 2019 edition saw nearly 20,000 runners and walkers cross the finish line.
The race usually takes place on the second Sunday of December each year.
Titus Ekiru won the race last year in the time of 2:07:59, a course record. Meanwhile, Margaret Muriuki stopped the clock at 2:31:10 to take the women’s race. Both are from Kenya.
Honolulu is the latest casualty in a long line of marathon and major race events that have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some races like the London Marathon staged an elite only portion in a closed-in approximate 2K loop.
